Morning Sketch / Self Portrait

Just a quick ink and watercolor self portrait I did to loosen up this morning. Having a hard time waking up today.
I have been drinking smoothies for breakfast these past few days but decided on a hearty breakfast of chorizo and eggs this morning. I do not regret the taste of this meal but I definitely regret the after effects as it is laying in my stomach like the Dude's bowling ball.  Back to smoothies tomorrow!

Watercolor...Traditional? Digital?

I sat down tonight and painted this watercolor in my sketchbook. I scanned it as the original full color piece, then saved it in grayscale and finally colored the grayscale version in photoshop.

I would be happy to hear which version is your favorite and why.  I love working traditionally but I enjoy the look of the digital color over b&w wash.

Chef Profiles

I have a list in my mind of people in occupations who I would like to create a series of drawings and paintings based on. Chefs are among this list. Here is a detail of a preliminary piece I started last night and finished this morning. It is just a detail because my camera is on the fritz and my camera phone takes lousy photos. Hope to solve this photo issue in the next day or two and will post the full image then.  This piece is done in pencil, ink and watercolor.

This is a piece I did this past week for the LA Times Syndicate on varmints making their way into the suburbs.

Kids from Jupiter & How to Spot Them

Jupiter is the new Mars. For years all we heard about was Mars. Mars this, Mars that...Monsters from Mars, Space Ships from Mars...blah, blah, blah. We even named a candy bar after the planet. Well, heads up! Jupiter has taken a big interest in our planet Earth and are now walking among us.

The big news is that although Jupiter is ahead of us by eons in regard to technology, their educational system is...uh, lacking. Well, not really. The parents of Jupiter just hate their kids so they ship them to Earth as soon as they reach the age 10. Or what is referred to on Jupiter as "Shlomko".

"I can't wait until our son Reezob reaches Shlomko, then it's out the capsule mister!"

Here are some ways you can spot a kid from Jupiter.
1. They are green . 2. They have six arms, three eyes and two antenna.  3. They are very excitable and are prone to raising their hands in an exuberant fashion.  4. They love books and are usually found carrying several at a time. 5. They have a tendency to put their hands down their pants. Evidently, Al Bundy is something of a God on Jupiter and this act is considered a show of respect for the almighty Al.

Well, there you have it. One last note, these kids from Jupiter are good kids with good values.
Just don't piss one off because they will disintegrate you without batting an eye.

NEW! Mural for SK8 RampZ

The owners of SK8 RampZ commissioned me to paint a mural for their front office area.
SK8 RampZ hand build skateboard ramps and will be having their grand opening this Saturday May 5th. They are located at 118 Cardinal Dr. in Wilmington (910) 274-3057.
Here are some shots of the whole work process. I took some photos of the area to be painted, put together a "very" crude sketch with my mouse in photoshop ( I have got to get on board with my Wacom on of these days). Next, I blocked out the colors. And finally I went in with black acrylic craft pen.

I really enjoyed working large and am hoping I can land some more gigs like this. Fun, fun, fun!

Retro Art - Never Out of Style

Retro is always hot!  Here is a piece done in acrylic and ink on canvas. I then photographed it and played with it in Photoshop.  I am looking to do some more retro work on wood and distress it a bit.

Will keep you all posted. This original measures 12 x 12.
